Felony Offenses
Auto Theft
Auto theft is a grand larceny if the value of the vehicle is greater than $200. It is an unclassified felony and is punishable by not less than one up to 20 years in prison. At the discretion of the judge or jury you could also receive up to 12 months in jail and a fine of not more than $2,500.
This offense is treated essentially as a grand larceny. There may be several defenses available and evidence in these cases is often very limited unless you have been caught actually driving the vehicle.
Many of these cases can be resolved without incarceration at a misdemeanor level depending on the specific circumstances of your case and your criminal record if there is one. An attorney can assist you in determining if you have any defenses to the charge and brokering an acceptable plea arrangement if there is not a viable defense.
